Tips on How to Keep Your Bladder Healthy

Incontinence affects a distinct portion of the elderly community. The condition can bring about embarrassment because of the stigma attached to it. However, people who suffer from incontinence need to understand that several ways could help them cope with the condition. Several options could help them live their daily lives easier.

One of the hurdles people with incontinence must overcome is the embarrassment of consulting a medical professional regarding their condition. Some refuse to acknowledge that they need medical attention to cope with the situation that’s bothering them. This leads to additional concerns which may impede their lifestyles. It falls on the caregivers to help the patients understand that they have to seek guidance from a professional to help them with their condition.

On the other hand, doctors should work closely with their patients regarding treatment plans. For example, they have to explain the healthy incontinence practices that will help the patients live better with the condition. They should also provide alternative solutions for patients requesting medical procedures to treat the disease.

Here are a few tips to keep your bladder healthy and prevent the onslaught of incontinence in your advanced years.

Urinate as needed and as often as possible.

One of the ways you can keep your bladder healthy is to respond to it properly. Urinate when you need to, and save it as regularly as possible. Avoid keeping your urine in because it may cause too much pressure on your organ. This might lead to weakened muscles and decreased muscular control in the future.

Ensure to empty the bladder fully.

Empty your bladder properly and keep the surrounding area clean, especially after a bowel movement. Relax your muscles and try not to rush the process. If you don’t, you may open yourself up to bladder infections.

Do pelvic floor exercises.

Strengthen your pelvic muscles with Kegel exercises. These exercises help keep urine from leaking whenever you sneeze, lift a heavy object, or laugh out loud. Doing these daily will strengthen the muscles supporting your bladder.

Exercise regularly to keep weight down.

One of the reasons why incontinence happens is because of extra poundage. The excess weight applies pressure on the organ and can weaken the muscles. Losing enough weight if you’re overweight or obese will help reduce the stress on the organ and keep it healthier.

Drink enough water

Water will help you regulate your body temperature, and it is necessary to drink every few hours to keep yourself hydrated. However, since the body is mostly water, it’s important to consult a medical professional regarding what a healthy amount of liquids would be for you. This will help you control the urination process, too.

Avoid too much caffeine and alcohol.

Alcohol and caffeinated drinks may be tasty but interfere with your bladder. So limit your intake and see the difference.

Takeaway

People need to keep their bladders healthy to prevent incontinence. Several ways help keep the organ healthy and stave off the condition.
